Charles Martin House

Historic Charles W. Martin House Demolished

Linda Hill Mann

The Charles W. Martin house was built in 1910. Charles was born in Athens in 1873 and died in 1961. He married Cora Fletcher in 1898. She was born in Mercer County in 1880 and died in Athens in 1959. Charles and Cora Martin were the parents of Dorsey Martin, a teacher at Concord Training School which later became Athens High School. Those who attended Athens High School during our years will remember the house as Dorsey Martin's home.

The Charles Martin house was built near the home of his father and mother, Levi Vermillion Martin and Louisa 'Lula' Fraces Kirtner. The Levi Martin house, built in 1880, was still standing in 2024. It is pictured on South State Street, along with the former Charles Martin house, in the Houses chapter of Athens We Knew.

Levi married  ‘Lula’ Kirtner, born in Virginia in 1851, in 1869. Levi and Lula were the parents of four children, Charles W., Cyrus Benson, Bill Harden and Nannie.  Levi and Lula were the grandparents of Dorsey Martin. Levi was born in Virginia in 1848 and died in Athens in 1937. 'Lula' died in Athens in 1945.

Photos in the gallery were contributed by Phyllis Mays Keatley, Roger Pennington, and Lois Miller.

The Charles W. Martin house at 208 South State Street, that we knew as the home of Athens High School teacher Dorsey Martin, was demolished in 2023.
