Then and Now
Margaret Ann Scott House
Near the Corner of South State and Caldwell Streets
Linda Hill Mann
This 2 story house had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with a total of 2,382 sq. ft. of living space.
The house was built by Joseph Caldwell. The property was first owned by A. T. Caperton and transferred to Joe Caldwell about 1902. It was then rented by Jack Wilkerson. Hugh Sweeney and his family rented the house next. Hugh was the hack (taxi) driver to Hinton, Princeton, Red Sulphur in Monroe County and anywhere he could get a load of passengers.
Many families lived in the house after the Sweeneys. They came to Athens for education at Concord, graduated and went on their way. Bill Smith and family lived here as did T. J. Perry and the Dove family. L. A. ‘Tucker’ Hobbs owned the house for a long time before selling it to John Irvin and Annie Christie Scott, parents of Margaret Ann Scott. Margaret Ann later owned the house, the small lot beside it and the house next door (103 Caldwell Street). The Margaret Ann Scott at house at101 Caldwell Street and the one beside it were demolished in the fall of 2023. The property in 2024 is owned by S & A Leasing, LLC - Athens Volunteer Fire Department, possibly to build a new volunteer fire department building when funds are available.
