Following the Civil War, Rev. William Holroyd moved his family to what is now Athens and built the community's first hotel, the Mountain House, on what is now the northeast corner of State and Vermillion Streets. Featuring a parlor for entertainment and also licensed as an ordinary (ale house), the Mountain House was once the social center for the community. Following the deaths of Rev. and Mrs. Holroyd, A. T. Maupin purchased the property, demolished the Mountain House, and built a store and apartment building on the site. Parker brothers Frank and Fred added a faux brick facade to the old Maupin store in the early 1960s. They sold Hotpoint appliances, RCA television sets, washing machines and hardware.
Parker Brothers was torn down in 1997 to accomodate the First Community Bank which was built on the site. The adjoining buildings, including the Athens Theater ,the William Holroyd House, and Bradley's store were also demolished.
