Then and Now
South State Street
South State Street Transformed in 1997
Charles Baxter Photos
State Street is Route 20 as it passes through Athens. The photo to the left was taken just south of Vermillion Street, in front of what was then the Bank of Athens. The old Hotel Athens (Bondurant Home), Beckett's Gulf Service Station, the old Massie Hotel (Beckett Home), and the Massie General Merchandise Store (Beckett Appliance in Our Years) shown here were subsequently demolished, along with several homes and building behind the historic structures.
This series of snapshots, taken over a few days, illustrate the transformation of the town that began in 1997. Scroll through them and imagine walking around the block, including Vermillion, State, and Caperton Streets.
