Jimmie's Restaurant in Princeton was always a favorite for family and friends.

Social life in our years often centered around food from several restaurants in or near Athens.

Shopping in Bluefield with the family was an exciting outting in the later 1950s and early 1960s.

Shops

Trips to Princeton and Bluefield provided a variety of retail and service shops not available in Athens.

Structures

Natural and engineered structures were unique distinations for many.

Kenney's was perhaps the first fast food chain to serve Athens and the surrounding area from it's restaurant near the intersection of Route 20 and Route 460.

Drive-Ins

There was no better way to enjoy the family car and good food with friends...

Bluestone State Park provided a place to explore mountain trails and secluded coves in the lake.

Parks and Recreation

West Virginia and local parks, fairs, and natural attractions were plentiful and accessible.

Friend's Homes

Athens was a special place during our years where families of friends welcomed teenagers into their homes.

The Colonial Theater in Bluefield was a favorite in Our Years.

Movie Theaters

There were theaters such as the Lavon and Mercer in Princeton and the Colonial and Granada in Bluefield.

Traveling by train from Hinton was always an option and the point of departure for the Athens High School Class of 1964 senior trip to Washington D.C.

Stations and Depots

Trains, planes, and buses were an important part of growing up during the 1950s and 60s.

Not far from Athens via a country road along the  Bluestone River, a young guy with a new driver's license will find the foundation and infrastructure of the West Virginia Turnpike bridge, hidden from the traffic above.

Favorites

A new driver's license provided freedom to explore the surrounding areas and find favorite places.
