Then and Now
Pipestem Falls
Linda Hill Mann
Pipestem Falls is a small waterfall on Pipestem Creek. It is located in Summers County and can be seen from Route 20. It is just a few miles from Pipestem State Park. There is a small pull off on the side of the road that can accomodate three of four cars. The Pipestem Falls sign marks the location. Brush has been cut back so the main lower falls can be seen from the road. There are wooden steps to a path to observe the upper falls. Follow the sound of the water. The falls are better seen in late fall when trees have lost their leaves.
“Pipestem Falls are four waterfalls strung together. The first three are about six feet high. The lower or main falls is about 30’ high." --- Ed Rehbein, discoverwv.blogspot.com
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph on June 7, 2023, reported that Gov. Jim Justice had announced in May 2023 that Pipestem Falls is now a part of the official West Virginia Waterfall Trail.
“Chasing waterfalls takes on a whole new meaning in West Virginia with the first-ever statewide Waterfall Trail. The trail…was created for travelers looking to get off the beaten path, reconnect with nature and discover more than two dozen waterfalls…” ---wvtourism.com
