John Matthew Cook (1882-1932), son of D. P. and Mahala Cook, married Ida E. Fletcher in 1908. According to his World War I draft registration he owned the J M Cook and Company store. He advertised in local publications and school year books from 1915 through 1927. Today it is the recognized almost official source for clothing for the girls and boys of the college and the citizenry of Athens.” Cook and Company also sold good eats, fresh fruits and candies. The store’s phone number was 44.
