Scott's Cash Store

Linda Hill Mann

Benjamin Brown Scott (1889-1957) owned and operated the Scott's Cash Store in Athens for seventeen years before moving to Roanoke in 1948. At the time, his store was one of two groceries in Athens. After moving to Roanoke he continued to be a grocer until he retired.

Margaret Ann Scott wrote in Mercer County History 1984 that Mr. Scott was named after his two grandfathers, William Brown Scott and Benjamin Fanning. Fanning was one of the founders of Athens; his house was the first built in a community that he first named Concord Church after becoming the  post master. Brown was married to Hattie Jane Pettrey, the daughter of Daniel and Mary Jane Miller Pettrey.

Brown Scott's obituary appears alongside his photo in the Gallery.
