White's Cash Store

Linda Hill Mann and Kay White Monohan

Quincy Dean White (1898-1952)  was the son of Horace Greely and Nannie Burch White. He married Neta Lee Alvis (1903-1955), daughter of Jim and Josephine Vaughn Alvis, in 1918.

In 1949 Quincy and Neta bought the Athens Cash Grocery and changed the name to White’s Cash Store. Cash stores were usually “cash and carry” offering neither credit nor delivery but their granddaughter Kay White Monohan said they did extend credit to their customers.  Quincy and Neta operated the store until Quincy’s death in 1952. Neta died unexpectedly in 1955 and their son’s Quincy Dean, Jr. and Jesse became co-proprietors.

They tore out the old wooden floor, installed a new concrete floor for dancing, and added a jukebox in the back room making White’s Cash Store the lunchtime hangout for the students of Athens High School. The store was located across State Street from the high school and students could be seen standing in line just to get in the door.

White’s Cash Store closed in 1972 or 1973. Kay White Monohan's memories of growing up around the store are recorded in the Stories chapter. Athens Town Hall is now located in the building.
