East Concord Street

Linda Hill Mann, Charles Baxter Photos

East Concord Street intersects with South State Street close to the south town limit. It is a short street, only about ⅓ of a mile long, ending in a cul-de-sac. Most of the houses were built between 1900 and 1962. It has not changed much since the 60s.

The descriptions of some of the oldest houses on the street, shown in the gallery, would not have been possible without the help of Henry Friedl. As a student, he mowed lawns for several of the residents in Athens. He stayed in contact with longtime residents Charlie Mann, Joe Parker, Derk Alvis and Linda Joan Alvis, who were happy to share their knowledge of the town. In addition, Henry remembered most of the streets, houses and residents who inhabited the town during the 1950s and 1960s.

One of the residents on the street was Mrs. Madeline Thompson Shorter. She was the home economics teacher at Athens High School from 1953 to 1975.
