Then and Now
Old Hinton Road

Old Hinton Road begins at the intersection of Church Street and ends a short distance from East Broadway Street. Before Route 20 was rerouted, Old Hinton Road was part of the main route from Athens to Speedway and Hinton. Currently the street features a mix of empty lots, newer houses, and homes built in the 1880s.
One notable building on Old Hinton Road is the house at 115. It was one of the earliest structures in what was then Concord Church, now Athens. Originally a two-story log building, it has since been renovated. This house was home to Masonic Lodge #48, which held its meetings in the large open room on the second floor. The first floor was used for various purposes, including a Subscription School where Miss Ella Holroyd spent her first day of school.
