Neighborhood Tour

Rich architectural features that accentuate the homes, schools and businesses of historic Athens reveal themselves most clearly when we take time to walk the neighborhoods and focus on what most often is dismissed as commonplace. In this section, old and new photographs are assembled to replicate what a resident or visitor might see in a specific neighborhood at a particular time.

In the pioneer days, the first houses in Athens were built by the Fanning, Vermillion, and French families. The Fanning House was visited in 2012 and photographed. The Vermillion House was demolished in the 1990s and its demise was photographed. The French House is still used as a residence.

The evolution of architecture, different priorities, and practicality contribute to Athens' dynamic landscape. Change is often disruptive and its value, for better or worse, generally is a matter of persepctive. These topics are covered in another section. The photographs in the slide shows are offered without commentary. This section will be expanded as additional photographs are contributed.
