Mountain House

David K. Baxter

Following the Civil War, Rev. William Holroyd moved his family to what is now Athens and built the community's first hotel, the Mountain House, on what is now the northeast corner of State and Vermillion Streets. Featuring a parlor for entertainment and also licensed as an ordinary (ale house), the Mountain House was once the social center for the community. Following the deaths of Rev. and Mrs. Holroyd, A. T. Maupin purchased the property, demolished the Mountain House, and built a store and apartment building on the site.
