Llewellyn's Beauty Shoppe

Linda Hill Mann

Llewellyn Wagner Fudge (1922-1982) was the daughter of Frank E. Wagner and Cinna R. Lilly.  She married Andrew ‘Andy’ Cary Fudge. Llewellyn and Andy had three children, son Andrew and daughters Jerry and Mary Joe.

Llewellyn first opened Llewellyn’s Beauty Shoppe in an upstairs room inside of Bradley’s store on Vermillion Street. Later, to be able to look after her children and serve her customers at the same time, she had a small addition built onto the side of her house on Broadway Street. She moved her beauty shop there when it was completed.

Some homes in a neighborhood just seem to naturally be where the neighborhood youngsters congregate. Llewellyn’s shop and home became that place. Even as adults with children and grandchildren of their own, many who grew up in Athens look back fondly on their memories of their time spent in Llewellyn’s shop and home. Andy had built a BBQ and small patio in the back. Friends gathered around Mary Joe’s pink and black RCA Victor 45 rpm record player. She would play records and the teens would dance on the patio. Sometimes the activities would all move indoors into Llewellyn’s Beauty Shoppe.

Llewellen’s daughter was an advertisement for her mom’s beautician skills. Jerry’s hair always looked great and every day brought a new color.

So many loved Llewellyn. She died at the age of 60, much too young.
