Texaco Service Station

Linda Hill Mann

David Samuel Barrett (1877-1950) married Jane Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Lilly about 1913. They lived in Roanoke, Virginia, moving to Athens between 1923 and 1930. Sam bought a house on the corner of South State Street and Concord Street. He also bought several lots on State Street outside Athens town limits. He owned and operated the Athens Texaco Station until his death in 1950. Sam Barrett also owned another store where he sold tires. It was located where the Athens Volunteer Fire Department is located in 2023.

Upon Sam’s death Henderson Preston ‘Bud’ Shumate (1874-1962) bought the Athens Texaco Service Station, the house on State Street and all the lots Sam owned.  Bud Shumate operated the Athens Texaco Service Station until his death in 1962. His son, Elvis Basil ‘Bud’ Shumate inherited the service station and he and his wife Sarah operated it.

Athens Texaco has been through several owners and operators over the years including Ray B. Cheatwood, Jr. who also operated Cheatwood & Sons and the J & D Store in Elgood. He was also the Elgood postmaster. ---findagrave.com #81933882

Burley Bill Shuck, his wife Elizabeth Ann ‘Liz’ Williams Shuck and their partner, John Grimm owned and operated the Texaco Station in the 1980s. They changed the name to Shuck Texaco Service Station. ---Elizabeth Shuck Obituary, Bluefield Daily Telegraph
