Then and Now
Athens High School
Introduction
Before Athens had its own high school, students were permitted to take a sixteen-unit course of study at the Concord State Normal School. After the decision in 1923 to establish a high school, classes were temporarily offered in the Normal School building and later in the basement rooms of the Christian Church. Following was a long and difficult process of requesting funds from the Legislature to construct an adequate facility for the students of Athens. This process is described in Early History and the anchor photo for that section shows the new building which was completed in January of 1941 after almost thirteen years of waiting.
A section on Faculty and Staff includes excerpts from the yearbooks that featured principals, teachers, secretaries, cooks, and custodians during Our Years--a period from 1951 - 1969. The complete versions of the yearbooks, along with selected additional printed material from this era is reproduced in Publications. There are contributed snapshots in the section devoted to special events and activities.
