January

1.     Coldest day of the year so far. Temperature ranging from 4 above to 3 below. Went to church and SS …was too cold for preaching so I stayed over town for mail. Liked to froze to death before I got home. Came out to Willie’s and stayed a while in the afternoon. Dr. Lilly was sick at his stomach all day. Stayed in all day. This is leap year and I expect to be busy all year. Was so cold, Mr. Swope froze his face going to church at 7:00. Didn’t have church at 7:00. Kept people busy “punching” fires so as to keep warm.

2. Good morning? 8 below zero on Broadway. 9 degrees at Dr. Vermillion’s- below; 14 at Adam Caperton’s-below; 10 at Ed Via’s- below. Water froze in bank building. Some of my flowers froze also. I went out to Fred Ball’s after supper. They are anxious for trial to come up. Still zero and a little below. Mama taking a real cold – seems like.

3. 2 below zero- But warming up some. Grandma sick. Dr. Vermillion over to see her. Fred Ball trial continued until April court by Martin. Fred sued for $50.00 again by Dan Martin over hay. Was out at Fred’s awhile after supper, D. and I. I am getting stuck full of cold from the way I feel. Quinzetta got such a cold- can’t talk above a whisper.

4. Still warming up. Daddy’s birthday. Aunt Isabelle came out last night to stay a day or so. Quincy’s and Neta and I stayed up to 10:30 to hear a program put on by Dodge Brothers Advertising the new Victor Six car. Paid $1000 a minute for 1 hour for a few people to talk. Heard Coolidge speak over radio. Was over town after supper.

5. Very nice day. 11 above zero this morning. Town election today. Got check back for my rain coat. Guess I will have to do without. Lonnie Houchins got his hand hurt- lost part of one finger. Lizzie spent the night with us. Ed Via’s boy got his hand hurt. First big picture made since we got our x-ray.

6. Another fine day. Got a letter from Lula. Rags got caught in a trap- one foot hurt bad. Concord had first game of basketball with Alderson at Princeton- beat Concord 33-22. Most of snow gone – will be, by tomorrow. Went to bed at 6:45- was tired and sleepy. Wrote Aunt Mattie and Grandma. My cold is some better.

7. This is a beautiful day- just like spring. Ten years ago today- a Holly Roller from Oakvale sent a message to President Wilson to stop the war at once. Ruby Ross came in to see us. Quincy’s license for truck came in. Men working for State quit their job. Fred, Lloyd Oxley, Forest and Lewis Wiley, Allen Wiley, Carl Boggess. Daddy and Quincy only two stayed on job. Uncle Gus and Flora & Bernard was here for a while. After supper, we came to town. Lights went off. Carl and Fred came over to hear radio. Sure was good. Gilbert came and Lacy also.

8. Rained during night some- went to SS and stayed for preaching. Spent rest of the day at home. Dr. Meador called and told us about Aunt Mattie falling and getting hurt. Uncle John & Aunt Hattie was out to see Grandma a while in the afternoon. We hear Bus men kicking about shop men riding in private cars. We will hear some excitement before long, mark my word. Went to church, came back to Quincy’s- stayed to hear Jubilee Singers. Lacy and Sam joined us. Rained all afternoon.

9. Raining this morning. Dr. Lilly and Fred Cooper gone to Charleston on business. I am very near by myself. Roads are now so bad you can’t get a car over them. Big Boss took Quincy to Princeton and talked to him about going to work. Went up to Quincy’s after supper. Willie came out for a while. Rags is some better. All the rest went back to work but Carl, Dad and Quincy this morning.

10. Ground froze hard and sun shining. Daddy and Quincy went back to work after talking with boss. Dr. Vermillion got out his horse and went to the country first time this winter. Nannie Worrell is in bad health- maybe insane. I am looking for my overcoat to come.

11. Ground froze a little this morning…a fine day for winter. Quincy came in from work sick. Jim and Minnie were over to see us about farm. Sure do hope we can sell it to him. Cause Pap wants to go back there to live. Rags foot is off papa said. Were up to Quincy’s after supper to take Hal home.

Bird and Ida was out a while. Went to church at 7:00. A mysterious car was sitting in front of Willie’s when we came back. Soon disappeared- had been there over an hour.

16. Another beautiful day. How we hate to stay in --such pretty weather. Mrs. Martin called me about Dan wanting baby Sunday for a few hours. May be fine to keep a record of this. Dr. Lilly’s very sick at his tummy- worse spell in a long time. Went to bed at 7:00 sharp.

17. Rained some during the night and still raining this morning. We heard that Dr. Ben Bird had a stroke of paralysis yesterday. I went to play put on for PTA at Baptist church- was good. Mrs. Martin wanted me to deliver another message to Willie and I refused to do it. Came over to town after supper for a while, Q.D. and me.

18. Rained during the night – misting a little along this morning. Somebody is loafing. Mack Wiley fired off of job by Beckett. Raining to beat the band.

19. Raining again and wind so high. Hailed a lot about 4:30 and still raining. I am blue cause the weather is so bad, I guess. I weigh 180 pounds on Barbary’s scale.

20. Cold as blazes. Bob McDowell shot himself sometime during the wee hours this morning. Mr. Sloan found him about 15 minutes to seven. I saw him at 7:50 before he had been moved. His people got here at 5:00, gathered together his things and took him and left- before his wife got here. You can’t love two because you cannot get by all the time.

21. 6 above zero this morning- snowed some during the night. Mrs. McDowell arrived here about 1 PM last night. She is not able to make the trip to Lewisburg so she will not get to see him. Too bad to be done that way even if she was kindly sore at him. Quincy, Neta, Papa and I went to ball game down at gym. Dean joined us at Jennings Drug Store. Armco 29- Concord 28. Quincy killed Rags. I haven’t got a dog now.

27. Cold and cloudy- snowed a little during the day. W. B. Crockett’s horse scared and throwed him on Macadam road and fractured his skull in two places. Mama and I came over town and it began snowing on us at Shannon’s corner and, believe me, it sure did pour on us until 9:00 PM. It went away this day.

28. A nice snow on the ground today. Mr. Crockett died during the night. Cold as the dickens- 2 above zero and continued cold all day. Went to bed at 6:30.
