Verlie's Diary

Germany invaded France. "Gone With the Wind" released. Benny Goodman and Count Basie gained popularity. New factories offered earnings up to $1,250 per year.

January


1.  Temp 10 above today. Got 8 eggs. Snowed during the night- All day a little. Dad and I went rabbit hunting, burned a brush pile, and went over to the school building to warm up for tomorrow opening of school. Snowing a lot.


2.  4 above zero today. Roads slick. Went to McComas. Dr. Lilly drove over and I drove back. Hattie sent hand piece over by Dunn. She forgot to put it in bag.


3.  3 above this morning. Clear but cold. 7 eggs today. Went over town for mail and fixed up church report for our meeting Sunday night after church services. Grover Lewis was up at Rufus Anderson’s today- drunk-also all night. Hasn’t been home for two weeks nearly.


4.  12 above 6 today. Went to McComas. Roads slickest I ever was out on. Snowed nearly all day and boy believe me, it was cold. Dr. Lilly drove both ways. Daddy’s birthday- 67 today. Mama had him a surprise supper when he came in from work.


5.  7 eggs today. Snowing some today. Temp- 18 above. Washed and went over to help Dr. Vermillion send out statements and by evening it was lots colder and still falling. Murial Ball came down after supper and paid me her rent- due today.


6.  9 above this morning. Went to McComas. Came home at 4:20. Missed choir practice tonight. Nobody went.


7.  10 above this morning. We went to SS in Red Martin’s car. He came for milk and church had a short business meeting after church. Snowing when SS over. Sleeted in afternoon. QD came out. Dad and I went to town. Daddy built fire in furnace at school building. I loafed with Mastin. We came home about 4:30 and it started snowing and boy did it pour- on to dark and still pouring. I am going to church and did. Boy how it snowed going and coming. Mrs. Eskew went with me.


8.  A big snow during the night- about 6 inches or more. Went to town and worked. Helped Dr. finish some of his statements. Snowed nearly all day real hard. I put out feed for the birds.


9.  Went to McComas. Put on our chains today. Had no trouble either way. Roads real slick but we made it okay.


10.   A fine day. Murial and Pansy came out awhile this morning. Went to town awhile this afternoon. Man came for me to have a picture taken- next Thursday 18th.


11.   Snowing this morning again. I drove to McComas today. Not so bad. 


12.   Raining this morning. Slick early. I went to Princeton awhile this morning to Four Shoe Sale. Got two pairs. Rode bus both ways. Thawing a lot today. Dad and I went to gym to Alderson Broadus/ Concord basketball game. They won. We lost. Roy Meadows at Pettrey died today. Took sick yesterday.


13.   Cloudy and warmer- melting fast. Has not had my car out since Dec 24. Snow drifts in alley prevent me from getting out. Dad & I put out feed for the quail on the farm. Ground has been covered since Dec 23. Sure been hard on the birds. Went over town after dinner. Jessie came out awhile. Went to Mr. Wells to choir practice at 7. Got home at 9:20. Andy Caldwell died last night.


14.  Raining all night and up until noon today. Went to SS & church. Mr. Rogers brought us home. 83 present for SS- very nice crowd for church. Stayed home all afternoon. Snow really is leaving this afternoon- melting fast and lots of wind. We went to church - Broadway Quintet & Jubilee Singers sang “Hush, Hush Somebody is Calling My Name”. Very nice crowd there. Mr. Wells brought us home.


15.   Temperature 22. Cold and a high wind. Snowing a little. Yesterday Dad & I took ice out of my fish pool. 15 to 20 inches thick solid over pool. 2 fish dead and another one nearly- brought it in house. I didn’t go to town today.


16.  Went to McComas and cold too believe me. Lloyd Lambert –teller at Princeton bank shot himself dead yesterday at 4:00. Shortage is belief. Stopped and asked about Uncle Tom Bauguess as we came home.


17.   Mr. Tom Bauguess died today. Cold this morning. Nearly zero-2 above. Boy what a month of winter. Went to town at 12:30. Hattie set my hair. Had “2 clean” Houchins set up at bank meeting. Went up to Ben Wiley’s to help fix for party tomorrow night at Julia’s- Woman’s Club.


18.  Bennie Gore came and stayed all night. 4 above this morning at home. Went to McComas. Had my picture taken at Mrs. Sages and went on to Julia’s & Ben’s to Women’s Club meeting. Helen Moore & I were joint hostesses with Julia Wiley.  Cushman, Sage, Crawford, Holroyd, Brammer, Smitty, Toothman, Mary Jane, Ruth Beckett, Helen Moore, Julia & myself. Helen brought me home.


19.  4 below this morning. Dressed and went to town as Bennie left at 11:30. I went to Uncle Tom Bauguess funeral with Rev. Hensley at Elgood. Dr. Lilly & Dr. Vermillion went. Florence White came back with us. Sure was cold. A big crowd out. A ballgame- Morris Harvey- Concord. But too cold for us. Can’t get car going.


20.  0 this morning. Went to McComas. Nearly got hit on bridge in Princeton as we came home. Road hog took it all on curve. Went out to Bergie’s to choir practice at 7. A nice crowd there.


21.  10 above this morning. This is going on 5 weeks of freezing weather without a let up. Went to SS & church- 89 present at SS- and home. Quinzetta & Jessie came out and spent the afternoon. We then had Murial for a while then got ready & went to BYPU. Daddy fixing his fire at school. No church. Rev Hensley sick with the flu so we came home and played checkers.


22.  Cold again last night- 9 above. Main water line out Broadway is froze up in front of Oxley’s & Caldwell’s where they lowered the road. Worked all day yesterday on it. Could not do any good. Caldwell & Lane can’t run fire in furnace. They got water to rest of Broadway but we don’t have any.


23.  Snowing hard all day. Went to McComas. 4-6 inches of snow as we came home. Left over there at 15 to 5 got home at 5 after six. We sure took it slow. Still snowing at bedtime.


24.  About 7 inches of snow. I fed the birds all morning. I got in the coal & put the cow up. Still snowing all day today. Wind high drifting. Went to town at 1:30. Schools turned out at 2: today till Monday- roads so bad and dangerous. Stopped to see Rev. Hensley a few minutes- been sick since Sunday in bed.


25.  Neta Shepherd set house on fire and burnt up everything in Giatto. We went to McComas. I took Dad’s shoes and had them ½ soled and heels. $1.25. Dr. Lilly drove over and I started to drive back and had a flat tire and nearly left the road at the second bridge below McComas and Dr. went back to get garage man come out and change tire and he drove on home from there. 6 above at bedtime.


26.  Zero this morning. Snowing a little. Water froze up out Broadway again. Went to town and revised my books at McComas today. Looked proofs for pictures over and came home. Zero at bedtime. Boy how cold.


27.  6 below here this morning at 7:30. 2 below at 9: Snowing some. Water frozen in kitchen pantry & dining room and drainpipe also to sink.


28.  Boy oh boy. What a winter. We went to SS and down to Methodist to church. Hensley sick. Stayed home at 7:30 did not go to church.


29.  Zero snowing yet. Wind blowing and snowing so hard. Could not see the top of the hill drifting so high. Wrecks on highway due to blinding snow. I went over town after dinner. Stopped at Wells a few minutes. Broadway froze up again.


30.  Went to McComas. Dr. Lilly driving.


31.  Zero. Good-by January. I bet everybody is glad you are gone. Went to town awhile.


February


1.  Went to McComas. 2 below zero.


2.  Groundhog Day. Snowed and finally the sun came out and so did I go out. So look out 40 more bad days. Went to town in the afternoon.


3.  Went to McComas. 2 above zero this morning- snowing some.


4.  5 above this morning. Went to SS & church. A house full for church. Sororities and fraternities came in a body. Went over town with Daddy to fix fire at school building. Stopped to see Dr. Lilly at office. Told him what was in the paper. $100,000 suit against him. Pansy Sheppard vs. Donzie Lilly. Went to church by myself at 7:00.


5.  Warmer today. Raining this morning. Went to Bluefield shopping for coat- got a tweed & a pie plate rose hat. A nice day. Not so cold. Went to Princeton with Uncle Bert to Bluefield on street car & back and home from Princeton with Whisle Scott. Dr. Lilly went to see Hartley Sanders about his case.


6.  Went to McComas today. Warmer so much all of snow left but the drifts. Muddy too believe me. Mrs. Reve Butler died in Hinton last night. Raining at bedtime.


7.  Cloudy most of day. Freezing all day and snowed some. Went to town in afternoon. Dr. Lilly gone to Hinton to Mrs. Butler’s funeral. Stopped and visited Mrs. Frank Parker.


8.  Went to McComas. Won’t go back again for a 12 day vacation. Dr. Lilly to be away.


9.  Went to town after dinner. City water still frozen.


10.  Very nice day after raining some. Daddy, Little Doc, Dick & I went to McComas for the payrolls for Dr. before he leaves tonight. Got back at 4. Dad had signed up and got his conservation gun check 3.95 + 4.50 for phosphate that there was to be no charge for. No choir practice.


11.  Went to SS & church. Wore my new rose plate hat & tweed coat. Kids came out in afternoon. Snowed during the night a little. Dr. Lilly left for Chicago last night for a week to dental meeting & visit Scott.


12.  Went over to office & sent out statements for Dr Lilly all day. Very nice day.


13.  Another nice day. We washed today and at 12: noon, the city water came on. Worked in afternoon till near five.


14.  Snowing & wind high. Blinding snow. I left for Aunt Bess’s on 12:00 bus and Mother didn’t want me to go. The worse day bus driver said he ever went over Flat Top Mountain. Boy and a bus full also. I had a fine day enjoyed it all. Got there at 2:20 in the worse storm I was ever in. Temp at 6: Was 12 below at Aunt Bess’s.


15.   Clear & cold. Snow melted a tiny bit. Zero at 6 tonight.


16.  Warmer a lot today. Aunt Bess & I went out to see her pig & look the barn over sawmill & Uncle Geo’s team of cattle. Daddy bought Quincy’s mulley calf for $20.00- scrubby looking.


17.  Cold this morning. Snowing a tiny bit. Caught bus home at 15 to eleven. Full bus & 4 standing. Hit Princeton at noon. Got Dad a new overcoat at Stag Clothing Co. It is real nice. Went to choir practice to Mrs. Caldwell & over to New River & Concord ballgame. Sis came for me to go with her. Dad went on and we didn’t know it until there.


18.  Snowing sleeting & raining &wind high. We went to SS & church. Mrs. Well’s brought us home. I stopped to see Barton’s about rent and Wells letter she wrote me. Rained & sleeted nearly all day. Did not go to church at 7:30. Still snow where it drifted.


19.  Cloudy & foggy still see some snow.


20.  Went to McComas. Snowed all day. Went to see Athens play Hinton and we sure did get a licking.


21.  Raining some. Went over town to get my hair set and be in on Mrs. Caldwell’s birthday set up in Bank meeting room. It was real nice.


22.  Went to McComas. Snowed again today. Hartley Sanders came over today in Dr. Lilly’s case vs. Sheppard damage suit to see Drs.


23.  Washed early. Very nice day. Went over & helped Dr. Vermillion post his books. I went to SS council meeting at 7 in Dr. Lilly’s office. Hensley, Dr. & I present.


24.  Rained & snowed today. I went over town after dinner. Mrs. Barton brought the ck. for $12.00- a real surprise. Went to Mrs. Lane’s to choir practice. Had a nice time.


25.  Ground white with snow and still snowing. This makes 64 days that the snow has been on ground all time.

29.  Up and over town early. Dr. Lilly sick with flu. Hattie went with me to McComas for the day. Waxed and cleaned everywhere. Went up to Thomas for Elmer White’s payroll. Got $25.00 Got home at 5:15. Went down to Dr. Lilly’s. Tournament started.


March


1.  A beautiful day. Went over town and down to Dr. Lilly’s. He called the office for me. Clownie Hight came & started my car- 1st time this year. We went to gym to tournament Princeton beat Bluefield, Bramwell beat Athens. Boy oh boy what a crowd. Princeton & Bluefield had to play overtime. We were beat by 1 point, Bluefield 2.


2.  Richard & I went to McComas for the day. Got home at 3:30. Dr. Lilly very sick. We went to tournament. Princeton just did beat Bramwell. Boy, a good game. I missed choir practice- first time tonight.


3.  Raining – went to SS & church. Hattie & I took a picture x-ray of Dr. Vermillion’s hand he hurt when going to see Dr. Lilly in the afternoon. I visited Hattie awhile afterwards. Stayed home- missed church.


4.  Cold- Very nice day. Mamma, Quinzetta & I went to Bluefield to see “Gone with the Wind”. Rained and cold.


5.   We missed McComas today. Dr. Lilly still sick.


6.  I went to town- a very nice day. Snow drifts still on in places.


7.  Missed McComas again today.


8.  Raining today- a little bit. Went to town after dinner.


9.  Cold. I went to town in afternoon for refreshments for choir practice at my home. 16 present including Mrs. Spangler.


10.  Went to SS & church.


11.  Dr. Lilly called for me to meet him in Princeton. Hartley Sanders office at 12:30. I took my car over to Wolford’s to have starter fixed. Cold & snowing. Really snowed in Bluefield. We went to a dental meeting also Mrs. Lilly shopped for hats & BC.

13.  Went over town in afternoon. Red Martin presented me with a summons to appear at courthouse at 9 Friday morning in Pansy Sheppard vs. Donzie Lilly trial.

15.  Cold rained & froze. So slick this morning. Mamma, Dr. Lilly & myself went to Princeton at 8:15. Trial put off to Monday morning at 9. We got home about 1:00.


16.  Went to McComas. Went to choir practice at Mrs. Eskews and Whittakers.


17.  Went to SS & church – a house full. Raining hard. Did not go to church.


18.  Up early and went to Princeton at 8:30 to trial. Put me in room and there I stayed all day. Was put on witness stand at 3- Got home with Dr. Vermillion Mother & me at 5:30.


19.  Went back to court at 9:. Was put on the witness stand again at 10:00- All evidence in by 1:30 and I got out of room. Jury got case at 10 to 3 and was out in 14 minutes. Came out in favor of Dr. Lilly- was for a burn.


20.  Boy, am I glad that is over. Washed and went to town for butter & came home at 5. Mama had a temperature of 103. Called Dr. at 7: Temp 102 then.


21.  Went to McComas. Had Murial come down and see about Ma during the day. Went to church for choir practice at 7:00. Mrs. Gumm playing piano. Dr. Vermillion came back again to see Ma. She is better but no get-up.


22.  Worked hard all day. Ironed & baked pies all afternoon. Dr. came again to see Mama. Mr. Barton is very sick also.


23.  Dad took sick this morning- got 2 sick. Put him in bed also went to Princeton for my car and groceries and home. Sis stayed with sick ones. Car froze up with me. Snowing coming in.


24.  Easter and pouring down snow and so cold and slick. Took Ma & Pa to SS and right back home and put them to bed. I stayed for church. Special music- 2 choirs. I went up to Uncle Doc’s .Aunt Alice’s and Marylee & Ruben were there after dinner awhile.


25.  Cold as can be. A big snow on. Ma & Dad are both better. I took Dad and we went over and fixed fire in furnace and up to see Dr. Vermillion.

20.  Went to McComas by way of Matoaka because of high water in Princeton. Bottoms are covered nearly ready to cover road at Thorn Street, People had to leave their homes in Stumpy Bottom. Went to choir practice at Mrs. Lane’s.


21.  Mastin called and said that Bob Pettrey died at 2:00 this morning. We went to SS & church & church meeting. A committee was appointed to build a fence in front of church…namely Dr. Vermillion, Mr. Bibbee & Verlie.


22.  Rained boy oh boy. Mama & I went to Princeton to see show “The Fighting 69th”


23.  Went to McComas. Daddy worse. Quincy’s cow has a new calf.


24.  Cold today. I take Dad every morning to work & go help him sweep. Went out to Mrs. Wells a few minutes and stopped at Eskew’s & Whittaker’s & Barton’s.


25.  Went to McComas. After supper I went to Women’s Club Capsule Party at Methodist Church. Ruth Beckett was my sister & I was hers.


26.  Raining early this morning. Chilean Burch came and spent the day. I went over town to help dad again to sweep.


27.   Washed windows up at Training School for Dad. Rufus, Murial, Quinzetta & I. A fine day. Tired tonight. Went to choir practice up at Bergie’s at 7:30.


28.  We went to SS & church. Dad feeling real bad today. After dinner Quinzetta & I took Mrs. Barton up to Princeton. We went to last show, not so good. Went to church at 7:30. Revival starts tonight. Young preaching.


29.  Washed early this morning. Then Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Hensley, & myself had a pot-luck supper on Mrs. Lane’s lawn for Whittakers & Eskews who are leaving tomorrow. M.E.Walls are coming to our street. Mr. & Mrs. Young also ate with us. Went to church.


30.  Went to McComas by way of Bluefield to see H.A. Lilly. He had gone home to Dunns. Stopped by Woodlawn cemetery to see tulips. 20,000 in bloom today. Went to church.


May


1.    A very nice day. Went over town in late afternoon. Went to   church.


2.    Snowed today- real chilly. Went to McComas. Went to church.


3.    No school in county today. Dad & I finished up windows at school   today. After dinner, Murial and I went to Princeton shopping. I got   me 2 vases and Mrs. Lilly a hat ashtray. Went to church. Snowing   hard at 4:00. I went to church. We all went.


4.    Ground white with snow and still snowing today. Went to   McComas Baptist.


5.    Went to SS & church. Snow on the ground yet today.

23.  Went to McComas. Went down to college to see kids get their high   school diplomas. Doc Lilly got his. 


24.  Ma & I cleaned up yard. Cut out tree branches etc.


25.  Mother sick in bed all day. Sore throat. Quinzetta & I went to   Princeton awhile in the afternoon.


26.  A fine day. Went to SS & to the college to college sermon. It was   real good. Hit the spot. Uncle Joe was up awhile. Rest of folks went   to sermon. He loafed with us. Went to church at 7:45.

28.  Went to McComas. Schools of the county are out and Dad is glad.


29.  Washed and ironed this morning. Went to college   Sis & I to see   Queen of Concord crowned and it was Rebecca Perry. “Hurrah” for   her. Sure was a crowd.

31.  Clear most of day. Went to graduation at 10: at college. Lillian Lilly   got her AB. Went over town afternoon for a few minutes.


June


1.    Went to McComas.


2.    A fine day. Went to SS & church. Lizzie called and we all went to   rock house for dinner and then up to Fountain Park for a while.   Home and went to church.

9.    Went to SS & down to Aunt Rosie’s. Raining. Aunt Alice, MaryLee,   Reuben and Uncle Bert were there for dinner. Home and went   over to Fred Ball’s and on to church in Speedway at 8:00  to see   Murial for a while. Cecil was there, first time I have seen him for   10 years.

16.  Rained. Went to SS & church and left as soon as we got a bite to   eat for Hinton to see Uncle Joe. Went to church at Speedway.   Hensley closed his revival. Had a casing going down as we got   home.

19.  Washed the room for Mama. Up to today rained 16 days straight   every day.


20.  Went to McComas. Jessie Lee White got his car today.


21.  Worked in garden some all afternoon. Pulled weeds in flower   garden. French signed Peace Papers with Hitler.


22.  Dad & I worked in garden and I burnt my back good. Lillian Burch   spent day with us. Hershel Wirtz came to rent Burch property and   did. Went to choir practice at 7:30.


23.  Went to SS & church. Hired the preacher after services. Went   down to see Bennie Mack Gore in afternoon. Home and Dr. Lilly   came over awhile for the 3 ducks I gave them. Went to church.   Preacher took in 15 of the new members.


24.  Mama & I worked all morning in garden and I have ruined my   back. Burnt it up. Oh how it hurts. Garden clear. Rained late in   evening. I went over town. Uncle Jake Gillespie is hauling stone for   church fence today.


25.  Went to McComas. Raining hard as we came home. Came new   road from Bluewell and out at New Hope Church.


26.  Rained again today. Dad & I walked over town after supper for   paper. Mr. & Mrs. Wells came home with us for aster plants.   Ordered my auto plates tonight.

28.  It did not rain today. Went over town early this morning for mail.


29.  A very nice day. Went over town for paper early to see what Geo   Brammer got in Bluefield court - hung  jury. Walter Cook died at   6:00 tonight. We & Sis went to Princeton after choir practice to   carnival. Played bingo and won a cookie jar.


30.  Cold. Went to SS & church and Sis & I went down to Aunt Rosie’s   for cherries. Got 2 5 qt. buckets full. Mrs. PW Massie died last   night. Went to church to Children’s Day Meet. Rained. Got my              license today 167-165.


July


1.    Raining early. Went to Walter Cook’s funeral & burial this   afternoon. Rufus Anderson, Blake Alvis, Bob Repass, Norman Bird,   was taken to jail yesterday out of Dan Coburn’s yard & alley.


2.    Rained again today. Went to McComas and came home at 12:30 to   attend Mrs. PA Massie’s funeral & burial at 2:00 in Baptist Church.   Went to Mr. Caldwell’s after supper awhile.


3.    Rained hard all morning & just pouring at this writing. Worked   with Dr. Vermillion sending statements. Had car greased today at   Clownie’s. Rained the hardest all day I ever saw.


4.    Clear & no rain anywhere around here. We went over town for   mail in morning and after dinner we went to Princeton to see   “South of the Border” and home. Sis went with us. Went up to   Ruby’s after supper to see about line fence between Mrs. Lane &   Burch property.


5.    A warm day. With Mr. Caldwell helping, we put up a fence   between Mrs. Lane & Burch Property. I went over and helped Dr.   Vermillion finish statements and mailed same. Dean came to town   today. I went over to Dr. Lilly’s office to a SS council meeting.


6.    A very nice day. Sprinkled rain today a little. Went to McComas.


7.    A very nice day. Cold 62 and windy. Went to SS & church. Stayed   home in afternoon. Went to church at 7:15 & BYPU – Ma & I.   Rained.


8.   Rained again today. 6 straight Mondays it has. Daddy took heifer   to Lee Oxley’s today. Went to McComas in afternoon.

29.  Hot. Rained late in afternoon. Went to Geo Thompson’s to see   about him cutting hay for us. Went down to Bennie’s for apples   and canned 17 halves and 1 qt.


30.  Rained nearly all day & yet at it this morning. We put up 25 halves   and 2 qts. - yesterday & today of apples. Went to McComas back   by way of Bluefield VA. Got home at 7:00.

August


1.    A very nice day. Shocked hay. Went to McComas. Uncle Joe came   for a day or so.


2.    Stacked upper field of hay today. Cut down rest of clover. Dad said   hay was best he ever had.


3.    Went to McComas. Uncle Joe went home today. Stacked clover   today. Three big stacks- halfway did it.


4.    A fine day. Went to SS & church. Home and down to Elgood to   White’s & Steele’s Homecoming. A very nice crowd there. I saw   Carl Blankenship first time in 25 years.


5.    Cloudy. Dad got out and sold all three stacks of hay for $45.00.  We   washed & canned beans- 10 halves- and ironed today.

7.    A fine day. Aunt Alice, MaryLee, Rueben, Uncle Doc, Aunt Christie,   & Aunt Pearl were here for dinner. We had a nice time. I had to go   to the office for Dr. Lilly setup in bank and home. Jessie came out     and asked to take us to Spencer on Saturday.

23.  Dad & I are painting the house. Lizzie called said that Bill was not   going on our trip to Renfro Valley and we would start at 2:00. At   2:00 Toots called from Elgood said that Bill had come in and that   he would go if we would wait till morning. I went to town and got      $50.00.


24.   Up and we left at 5:20. Went by Charleston, Huntington into   Kentucky to Winchester and back to Richmond & Renfro Valley.   Got there at 15 to 6. Ate supper, dressed and went out to the Barn   for the 8:30 show and was it good. Never saw such a crowd. Was   there until 12:00 and left to find a place to stay all night and we   never found it.

4.  Dr. & Mrs. Vermillion left early this morning for New York to visit kids. I went over town and gave Dr. Lilly a dose of cold serum.

6.  A fine day. Went to SS & church, Left for Hinton right away. Had flat tire at Jeri Hites. Came back and had Clownie fix it and went on to Hinton. Uncle Joe was gone to a Mrs. Ferrell’s funeral. We came back and stopped at Bennie’s awhile. Went to church at 7:30


7.  Went over town in afternoon. Raining a little in late afternoon. Cincinnati Reds won today 5-0 playing Detroit Tigers.


8.  Over town early. Dr. Lilly sick in bed and I had to go to McComas by myself today. Cincinnati Reds won the World Series today to a score of 2 to 1 First time since 1919.


9.  Went over town to see how Dr. Lilly is feeling. Better up and out today. Gave him a dose of cold serum.


10.   Went to McComas. Beautiful weather. After supper I went to Dr. Lilly’s office to SS Council meeting. Dr. & Mrs. Vermillion in from a week in New York and visiting Ruth Shumate.


11.   Went to town early & wrote 25 SS cards to girl down at hall. I painted in afternoon on garage.


12.   Dandy day, Dad & I painted part of garage second coat. Sis came out. I went over town to take Mrs. Vermillion 2 pound butter. Mr. Wells came and said he would not want any more milk or butter.

November                


1.  A very nice day. Mrs. Crawford died last night.


2.  A big football game. Dad & I went to Mrs. Crawford’s funeral & burial in Princeton. Concord won.


3.  A very nice day. Went to SS & church. We went over to Fred Ball’s in afternoon awhile.  Came home and here was Uncle Hade’s family was leaving stayed about 2 hours. Went to church at 7:30.

5.  Election Day. Raining late in afternoon. Dad voted early for the first time. Did not ask him to do so. Went over town after supper. Ma took a dose of cold serum. Roosevelt elected by over 50000 votes over Willkie.


6.  Nice day. Dr. & I went to McComas. Took Bill with us. Was over there till about 4:00. All Democrats won out in county but John Wirtz & Ras Wiley. They lost. John by 37 votes.


7.  Aunt Rose called for me to go to Princeton to find Grover if we can. Been up there over a week. We went and looked after some business for her. Got home at 3:00. Did not find him. Margie Gautier was buried today. Funeral at Mrs. Gautier’s. Ma went.

9.  Worked around house. Dad oiled the floors. Aunt Rose called and wanted us to go and get Grover out of jail. Lizzie & Bill got him out in afternoon. Ma & Dad took another dose of cold serum.


10.   A fine day. Went to SS & church. After dinner we went down to see Estelline Thompson below Elgood. Quinzetta went and we got 2 bu. walnuts. Rained as we came home. Went to Methodist church to hear Rev Belcher preach a community meeting.


11.   A very nice day but wind high all day. Blew our chimney down. Fodder blew everywhere.


12.   Went to McComas to see about business. Nothing done on room yet. Got pay roll & worked it up when we got back. Took til 2:30.


13.   Washed this morning. Rained all afternoon. Went over town. Took Ma & Dad over for their cold serum tonight.

15.   Still snowing this morning and all day. Wind high too - 24 temp. Ma & I dressed and went to college at 15 to 1 and parked on drive circle to see Salem & Concord play football. We won 13-0. Boy oh boy a bad day, worst yet.


16.   16 above this morning and still snowing. Three days. Ground just barely covered. Dad & I went over and fixed fires in school building. Helen Bradley & Dr. Gatherum was married at 4:30 in Methodist church by Rev. Hensley. Church full.

21.   A fine day. Thanksgiving today. I came home at 5:00 with Wilson Gautier & Uncle Doc from Aunt Rosie’s. Had a nice time while there.

23.   We worked around house all day. Rained a little. Went over town to take Mrs. Vermillion butter at 4:30.

26.   Went to McComas for the day. Helped get the building finished, They laid floor and started ceiling & side finishing boards on. Bill Cook was there most of time.


27.   Cold sleeting raining turning to snow about noon. Shumate & son killed our pig today. I went to town early in the morning. Counted SS bank money- $18.99.

1.  Raining today. Went to SS & church. Went to show at 1:00. Went to church at 7:00


2.  Went to McComas. Cloudy cleared up some tho. Plumbers finished up their work today.


3.  Snowed today. 15 above zero this morning. Dr. Lilly and I went to McComas. Doc Oxley & Otis Mann painted today. Dr. & I had to help them so we could get done.


4.  2 above zero; 4 above zero-Dr. Lilly’s; 4 above zero –Dr. Vermillion’s; 4 above zero-Jenning’s drug. Red Martin and I went to McComas. Cleaned waxed and placed all furniture. Ready for work tomorrow. Went to choir practice at the church. Snowed some today.


5.  Raining snowing & sleeting today. We went to McComas for our first day’s work in our new office in Post Office building. Had lots of patients. Like new office - fine.


6.  Clear and cold. 24 temp. Ma & I went to Princeton. Got our studio couch and it was delivered also -Very nice. Had my permanent set today. And went to choir practice at 7 to 8. Jessie & Lodema were over awhile today.


7.  Went to McComas, Dunn went & helped put up radio aerial & finished painting. Snowed as we went & rained as we came home. Car lights went out on us and car stopped running and we had to be pulled into Princeton. Got a battery at Crockets and got home at 8:

16.   Rained. Up early washed and went down to Uncle Bert’s to see if they knew of Aunt Rhoda’s death. Came home and Ma & I left and went to Terry’s and from there to Beartown church to funeral and home thru mountains to hard road above McComas near Giatto and home at 4:00. Tired too believe me. Athens High beat Oakvale.


17.   Went to McComas. We went to gym to see Concord beat King bad and a large crowd there.


18.   Worked hard all morning. Went up to office. Dr. Uriah set us up his birthday party. I went on up to work for Mrs. Mastin awhile. She went to McNeer’s to potluck supper & toilet paper party.

20.   A very nice day. Ma & I went to Princeton this morning shopping. In afternoon we put up, Dr. Vermillion & I, 150 boxes of candy and boy it was a job.


21.   Went to McComas, Dr. & I. I went to choir practice at 7:00 & gave Mrs. Wolfred a box of Whitman candy.


22.   Went to SS & church. Old Santa Claus came and we had a real treat & big time- 140 present. Went to show after dinner- The Trail of the Lonesome Pine. Went to church at 7:30 - Chedister & her jr. choir put on a program.


23.   Washed, ironed, done everything necessary. Went over town about 2:00. Saw Scott first time said he came home Friday.


24.   Went to McComas. Scott likes our new office and so do we.  Mr. & Mrs. Wells brought Santa down for a few minutes. Came I & went out and delivered a bunch of packages and home about 5:30.


25.   Raining Christmas warm. Old Santa came. Aunt Rosa & Lizzie & Bill came for dinner. Mrs. Wells’ grandmother died about 9:35 tonight.


26.   I went to McComas. We went out to Wells awhile after supper.


27.   Raining late in day. Went over town at 11: to have my hair fixed but Smitty was gone. Went up to see Mastin a few minutes and back to office and fixed report for church meeting Sunday of rock fence.


28.   Rained some today. Went over to office and made church report for meeting tomorrow. After dinner we went to GlenLyn to see Aunt Emma. They were all gone. Came home and dad & I went over to Fred Ball’s and paid him for lumber for coal house- $11.00. After supper I went out to Wells to see if Mrs. Morton & kids were all ok & was.


29.   Raining. We went to SS & church. No church meeting after church services because there were not enough present to make reports. Daddy was elected to President of the Men’s Sunday School class. A big honor. Raining all day hard. Went to church, Mrs. Lilly called me to stop on the way to church. She had robes down there ready to sew them back. Ask me for advice. Snowing before church and after.


30.   Mountains white all day with snow. I worked awhile for Mastin and helped Dr. Vermillion “post” up today. Snowing some today.


31.   25 Temperature. Wells came in last night from Georgia. Mountains to McComas white with snow. Crane Creek office & store was broke into last night. Good-by 40.
