1. A bad snow. Snowed some all day. We did not go to McComas.

12. Colder some today. Went to gym to see Fairmont vs. Concord play. We were beat by 2 points 67-65. Snowing some as we came home.

13. 13 above. Cold this morning. Snowed during the night. Went to SS & church- nearly froze - church so cold. Came over town and down to Dr. Lilly’s to see the baby. Dr. Lilly sick and not able to get out today cold.

16. Cold this day. Went to snowing in the afternoon and just poured & sleeted until 9:30. Mr. Wells came out after supper also Quincys. A bad night to be out.

17. Temp 16. About 4 inches of snow & sleet on roads. We started to McComas, stopped in Princeton awhile and went on to Bluefield and came back home. Got back at 12:30. Dr. Lilly feeling too bad to go on. Cold in chest & head, so we came home.

18. Temp 22 above. Clear & sun bright but not hot. Dr. Lilly in bed with flu. Dr. Vermillion was in to see him. Callahans left for Baltimore early this morning. Ins. Co. attached his furniture.

20. Temp. 20 this morning. Went to SS & church. Had to walk over. Could not get my car out. The church voted to buy Bob Davis house for parsonage and $13000 repair on church. Snowing in afternoon and night. Temp 20. Wetzel Williams died at 5:30.

21. Temp 22 above. Sleeting and slick this morning early. Turning to rain and snow and melting a lot. All steel workers came out at midnight on strike. Dr. Lilly is out again. Been in sick since Thursday afternoon. Ennis’s brother came to QD’s tonight from overseas - 3 years.

22. Temp 10 above this morning. Really cold. Went to McComas as Wetzel Williams is buried today. Stayed cold all day below 20. Quincy’s came out awhile after supper.

24. Cold & cloudy. Went to McComas. Snowing late in afternoon and was right slick as we came home. Quincy’s came out awhile after supper. President Stewart wrote for a conference with Quincy in the morning.

26. Temp 18 cold. I brought my car out and got some feed. Snowing about 3:30 and on till bedtime. I went out to Quincy’s awhile and did it snow. Was slick getting home.

1. Temp 16 this morning. Clear & sun out. Very nice day.

3. Temp 24. Clear & cold all day. Went to SS & church. Over to see Uncle Bert.

4. Temp 25. A very nice day. Raining late in evening.

5. Cloudy & raining this morning. Ready to go to McComas and Toots called saying that Aunt Rose had died and to come. Dad & I went down there. Lizzie in bed with the pneumonia. We got home at 4:30. QD’s came over awhile after supper.

6. Cloudy and raining some today. Dr. Lilly sick in bed all day. Quincy sold his car today. Getting colder a lot. Went out to Quincy’s awhile.

7. Temp 20. This morning and a high wind. Drove Dr. & Mrs. Vermillion to Elgood to Aunt Rose’s funeral & burial. Very nice crowd there. Uncle Hade, Marylee, & Helen Webster came over and had supper with us. Also Grover came home with me to stay a day or so but went with Uncle Hade for the night.

8. Temp 20 this morning. Sun out and warm. The Northern Lights were beautiful last night. Went out to Quincy’s awhile. Colder a lot.

9. Raining most of the day. Got a letter from Hartley Sanders about the notice I gave JH Bell also saying to notify Grover & Lizzie about Aunt Rose’s will he wrote for her in 1940. Fred Hazelwood Minnie’s boy died in Pinecrest Sanatorium – only there 3 days.

10. Raining hard this morning. Temp 34. Went to SS & church. Had a fire in bookcase near one of the gas heaters in girl’s classroom. In late afternoon sleeting and turning to snow and it just poured until after dark. Temp 24 at bedtime.

11. Temp 22 this morning. Snowing a little. Not as slick as we thought that it would be. Sun out and thawing a lot by 10:30.

12. Temp 45. A very nice day. Went to McComas. Snow on roads some as we went over – slick in some places.

13. Raining today. Temp 56. Bill Shepherd was in a few minutes to tell me about Aunt Rose’s will. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper. Wind blowing high and hard at 9:30.

14. Temp 56. This morning very nice morning turning colder. Snowing at 10:40 and blowed around all day. Temperature dropping fast. Went to McComas. 22 Above at 7:30.

15. Temp 9 at 5:30 and 6 above at 6:10 this morning. Wind high. 2 above at Dr. Vermillion’s. Clear- sun out but still cold at noon. Grover came in at 6:30 frozen.

20. Temp 27. Snowing & wind high all day. A real March day. Ben Reid came in handed me a check for $500.00. My house is sold to Edith Eddins of Welch. Boy it made me sick. Went out to Quincy’s awhile. His birthday.

23. A fine day. Sun so warm & bright. Stayed home expecting Ben Reid to come or call about closing deal on property.

24. Temp 30. Snowing all day. Colder a lot. Went to SS & church. Ben Reid called me to come over to the office and we fixed up everything and closed deal on property as of yesterday. Went to Speedway with Dr. Vermillion to see a woman who fell. Sent her to hospital. Went down to Quincy’s awhile and home. Went to church at 7:30 still snowing.

25. Temp 16. This morning. High winds & still blowing snow. Dr. Lilly gone all day to Bluefield to Dental Meeting. Mae Dobbins came and we cleaned floors and waxed everything today. So tired I went to bed at 8:30.

26. Temp 48 today. A fine day. Athens High played Princeton High in Princeton at 8:00. A packed house. Athens won 55-42. Made Princeton sick the way Joe’s boys played. W. Klingensmith, Everett Martin, Morris Hill, Jack White, Belcher on team. We all went.

3. A fine day. Went to SS & church. Afternoon we drove over to Princeton to Allen Pennington’s home, his wife Rosa is dead. Stopped at Dr. Lilly’s home awhile to see Phil & “Wes” & Libby Ann. They are leaving in the morning for Iowa. Went to church at 7:30.

4. A fine day. Real warm. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper.

8. Raining today. We are going to Princeton to basketball tournament.  Athens 64 played Princeton 54 & Beaver41 played Matoaka 40. Athens High beat Princeton. Boy what a crowd I never saw. Just pouring the rain as we came home.

16. Rained some today. I took my car and Dad, Mother, Jessie, Lodema & Sis & I went to Bluefield to see Athens High play Iaeger in finals. Iaeger won over Athens. A large crowd there. Gym full. 2 fights. Plenty of excitement.

22. A fine day. Need some rain. Mother, Ida Faulkner, & I went to Graham Chapel to Myrtle Martin’s funeral. Not so many there. A terrific headache after supper. I went to bed.

23. Went to McComas today. Took my car. Dr. Lilly took his to Bluefield and put it in garage to be worked on. Planted onions sets after supper. Ennis & kids came down awhile.

20. Raining this morning a little. Dr. Lilly left yesterday for Charleston WVa to attend the West Va State Dental meeting for 3 days. Blaine Jennings painted bedroom & kitchen - first coat- tonight. I got to bed at 1:00 this night.

21. Raining this day. School election was held today and passed. Blaine put on second coat today. I worked until 11:00 tonight.

1. Cloudy & raining some. Sis & I went to Bluefield shopping. Stores closed at 6:00 so we did not get much done.

10. A fine day. We had 16 qts. cherries. Real nice ones. Mrs. Doc Nash died last night. Went up to open house at Baptist parsonage. Real nice.

11. A nice day. Hot. Dr. Lilly, Mrs. Lilly and Ann left at 4:00 this morning for Iowa to see Phyllis. I waxed 2 rooms today. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper.

12. Raining today. After dinner Mother, Dad & I went to Elgood to Mrs. Nash’s funeral & burial. Rained while we were there and just poured after we got back. Was needed bad. Nancy Grim married today at Methodist church at 4:00. Big wedding.

13. Rained today & cloudy all day. Cleaned and waxed operating room today. No flour in town today since Tuesday. Reports that bakeries will close Saturday. No wheat or flour.

15. A fine day. Bread trucks made their last run today. No flour at bakeries. Went down to Quincy’s farm. Took Quincy, Neta & Sis & dad and I came and got Mother. Went for a ride, stopped at Quincy’s and home.

16. A fine day. Father’s Day. Went to SS - 116 present. Fern went- stayed for church. Got home and our cow was out. Got her at Charlie Moore’s garden on Missionary Ridge. Drunks tore down gate & 5 fence posts. We had to dig holes to put in posts & fix fence. Went to church at 8:00.

17. Rained some today. Made wax until it blew up and hit the ceiling and I quit.

18. A fine day. Hot. Cleaned laboratory & floors in hall & toilet. I went with Chauncy Wiley & wife over to Lacy Lewis’s farm to get cherries at 5:00. They got 21 gallons. Home at 6:20.

19. A hot day here. Frank Houchins at Pipestem shot himself today. Leaves a wife and 8 kids. Rained some today. Joe Louis knocked out Billy Conn in the eighth round tonight. Heard it out at Quincy’s.

20. Boy oh Boy, it is hot this morning. Rained a good rain today. Dad & I went for cherries down to Lewis’s farm at 5:30. Got 8 gallons. Lightning and rain soon after we got home. Just poured. Seeded cherries until 10:30.

July

20.  Hot again today. Billy Gordon got first degree murder for killing Mrs. Carr. Sis, Mother & I went to Princeton after supper. Rained in Princeton this afternoon. Quincy took his calf today. I got us a six week pig from Vernie White tonight.

21.  A fine day. Went to SS & church. A good rain in the afternoon. We drove to Lerona and home, then down to Quincy’s awhile. Went up to QD”S after supper and they & I went out to Speedway to tent meeting.

22.  Raining this morning- all morning. A hard rain from 11:30 to 1:15. Boy, but it was nice. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper. Neta sick. Mother milked for them.

30.  Went to McComas. Put up 3 gallons huckleberry’s today. Dr. ST Bird dentist in Princeton died at 4:15 - Heart attack. QD’s came down awhile after supper.

August

1.  Did not go to McComas today. Dr. Lilly went to Association at Spanishburg until noon and came in. We all went to Dr. ST Bird’s funeral. Mother and I left at 12:15, shopped awhile and on to funeral at 2:30.

2.  A fine day. Not hot - cloudy most of the day. Went to church at 8:00. Took Fern to graduation exercise Bible School. A good program. Several there. Sis & Ennis, Mother & I went.

3.  Another day not so hot- cloudy most of the day.

4.  A fine morning. Went to SS & church. Rained a good rain about 2:00 - a hard one. We went out to Quincy’s awhile. Ma, Sis & I went to tent meeting at Speedway 5:00 to 6:00. There’s a big crowd. Got home at 10:30.

5.  Warm this morning and some cloudy. Judge HG Woods died at 8:30 tonight in Princeton.

6.  Went to McComas. Cloudy, raining at 2:00. A good rain- only sprinkled here in Athens. Primary Election. 2 Republicans elected on Board of Education. Red Martin was nominated.

7.  Cold this morning and cloudy all day. Drs. Lilly & Vermillion went to Judge Woods’s funeral in Princeton at 2:30. Brought Mother to Dr. Vermillion with a burnt leg on oven door last Friday. Not doing so good.

8.  Cool today. Brought Mother again to Dr. Vermillion after supper and on down to Quincy’s awhile.

10.  Scott and Beth have twins born at 3 this morning- one 7 lb. 6 oz. and one 5 lb. 2 oz. Both are fine. Cool and nice day. Went to SS & church. Fern stayed for church and was real good. Her first time to church. After dinner I & Daddy stopped at Wells to see his 2 brothers and 2 sisters and out to Quincy’s awhile. I saw Quinzetta off to Detroit tonight at 9:30- 8-11-46

12.  Temp 50. Sis got a letter from board saying she was changed to Coburn School. Was out to Quincy’s and strung 1 bu. beans. Mother will can them tomorrow.

13.  Temp 46 this morning and cold all day. We went to McComas and Watts had a fire in the furnace and it felt good. Went out to Quincy’s awhile after supper. Strung 1 bu beans.

25.  A fine day. Cool this morning early. Took Mr. E. Frazier to Princeton to catch the bus to Glenlyn. Santy was real good at our house. I got $50 in cash and 9 pieces of Fostoria. Went out to Wells awhile about 10:30. Ate supper at Quincys and saw them open their presents.
