Verlie's Diary

Kay White Monohan

Diaries were written from 1927-1964 by Verlie White, daughter of Horace Greeley White and Nannie Burch White. Verlie was the great granddaughter of Benjamin Fanning and Nancy Jane Martin. Benjamin was one of the founding fathers of Athens and the first postmaster.

The diaries for 1932-35, 1938-39, 1941, 1943, 1947-48, 1955, and 1958-60 have been lost. Moreover, only the month of January exists for 1963. Contributor Kay White Monohan explained that the original diaries were stored in an attic following Verlie's death in 1966 and were damaged by water. When discovered decades later those unreadable may have been discarded. For context, links to lost diary years below lead to summaries of major news events that were shaping Verlie's world.
